The First Look

I’m back!! Blogging has been really difficult to fit into our crazy schedules between Carson’s work (seriously, he got home from work at 5am the other day and was up at 9am again) and my classes and graduate assistantship but I’m here and I want to share all about our first look today.

We chose to do something slightly different for our first look because before I saw Carson I had a first look with my dad. This was something that was really important to me because I feel like I’m equal parts a daddy’s girl and a momma’s girl. I even considered having both of my parents walk me down the aisle but in the end I decided that the aisle would be too squished and that we didn’t walk to take away the importance of the moment from pop.

Had to help him with his tie!

And it was time for first look round number 2!

Had to admire my wonderful wedding gift

I’m so glad that we were able to do a first look because it was nice to get that first moment alone together and have a few minutes to relax before craziness ensued. Did you do a first look?

Wedding Guest Must Haves

We’re in the middle of wedding seasons #2 right now and I’m two weddings down and one to go before the end of the year. I thought this would be the perfect time to share some of my favorite wedding must haves as I complete the wedding circuit.

This list could include many items, from flats to lip gloss, but I chose to stick with the very basics and have compiled a list of three wedding essentials. Let’s jump right in.

Evian facial spray! This is a wonderful all-purpose little can of goodness. I use it in the mornings before weddings to help hydrate my skin and reapply during weddings to give my makeup a little boost. It’s small enough to fit in my purse which makes it extra convenient. You can find more info here. I’m always wary of facial mists and anything that isn’t specifically made for oily skin, because that’s one of my biggest skin issues, but this spray was light enough to not cause any excess shine and only enhanced my makeup. I’d call that a win.

FatFighter! I don’t know what it is about wedding food but I can never seem to get enough (the fact that it’s technically free never hurts). Although that can often lead to disastrous results for my diet, especially when I have several back to back weddings. This is when I pull out my secret weapon – this diet supplement helps to block some of the fat and carbs of my heaviest meal of the day which saves me a lot of guilt and gym time.

And last but not least:

Tissues! Weddings have always been a time when I’ve been prone to water works and it’s even worse now that I’m married and have wonderful flashbacks to my own wedding day. This means that I am in constant need of tissues from the walk down the aisle to the father/daughter dances. I mean…do some people actually manage to not cry? And of course you get bonus points if your tissues feature the characters from Frozen.

What are some of your other most basic wedding must haves?? I’d love to hear below.

A Wedding Gift

We’re back to talking about our wedding – one of my favorite days of the week!! Before we move on to our First Look, let’s talk about gifts. Previously I talked about the gifts that I gave to my bridesmaids and matron of honor here but my gift to Carson took just as much time and thought, if not more.

Of course I scoured the internet first for ideas first and it took me a long time to narrow down my options. In the end I decided that I wanted to get him something that he could have with him on our wedding day and that incorporated something that he loved. Of course it had to be Star Wars cufflinks!! I had them hidden under my dresser for 3 months and I was dying to give them to Carson, but managed to wait 😉

Can we talk for a second about how hard it is to keep gifts a secret when you share an Amazon Prime account?! It is beyond ridiculous. I had to tell Carson to not look in the purchase history and remove the confirmation email from his inbox. But I did manage to make it a surprise and threw in a little bonus pendant that had Genesis 31:49, “The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another.” He keeps one half and I have the other. I wrote my letter to him in a notebook that I had made the previous summer while we were visiting our parents in Vermont. At the time that I made it I knew that I was going to write my wedding letter in it for him which is why I included a sailboat and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, “Life is a journey, not a destination.”

He surprised me by having his best man drop off a letter and gift the morning of and he wrote his letter on Harry Potter stationery so how can you go wrong with that? It was funny to see that we shared a lot of the same sentiments in our letters to each other. He also gave me a rose and a Pandora charm that had a ring pillow with wedding bands on it. I love it so much!

Did you exchange gifts on your wedding day?

My Wedding Dress

It’s finally time to talk about the dress!! I had several people ask me before the wedding what they should wear and my response was, “I’ll be wearing a long white dress so it’s up to you.” I’ve actually never been good at finding dresses to wear for weddings, except, obviously, for this one. So let’s go back to the beginning.

I went to several bridal salons to try on dresses, I went with my mom, I went with my aunt and I went with my bridesmaids. For some reason, I was totally expecting more vocal opinions from everyone…but in the end it really worked better that everyone let me decide because I’m such a people pleaser that it could have ended in disaster. I eventually decided that this dress was the one. I loved it. It was a perfect mixture of romantic and elegant. It even arrived right around my birthday which was a perfect gift!

I got super lucky because the only alterations I had to get done were hemming the bottom and adding a bustle. And for some reason, over the years, dresses with spectacular backs have been my thing so of course my wedding dress had to have a gorgeous back too. My mom helped me get it on and those are some of my absolute favorite photos from the wedding.

0089_WrightHolt_WED_GBPhoto_201606050067_WrightHolt_WED_GBPhoto_20160605-2And last but not least, I put on my (Harry Potter) garter! One of my bridesmaids got it for me and of course I had to wear it – even though it was not shared publicly because we didn’t do a garter toss. Still loved this touch though.

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!! I am so excited for this weekend and all of our plans. Not going to lie, on Saturday we’re going to see Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in concert so obviously one of my favorites today has to be Harry Potter related. Linking up with Amanda, April, Karli, Katie, Erika and Monica today.

  • Book: YES. So excited to have Harry Potter back in my life, even if it is in play format. Now I just have to wait for them to bring it to the U.S.!

jane the virgin

  • Show: Jane the Virgin. One of my best friends loves this show and has been telling me to watch it for a really long time…so I finally did it and am on Season 2 already. So obsessed and in love. It is hilarious and has lots of plot twists.

  • Recipe: These Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps from the Cheesecake factory. Absolutely delicious!! You can find the recipe here. I’m obsessed. Pretty sure I’ll be eating them every day for at least the next month, sorry hubby.

  • Product: A spa in a bottle. Yep, just the scent alone immediately makes me relax and it has been so good for my skin!! Love all of the natural goodness in this (and so does my face!).

  • Post: My friend Lauren, over at Oh Hey I Like That, shared her favorite chocolate chip recipes and I just can’t resist!! We may or may not have been eating a lot of chocolate chip pancakes around here recently…

What have you been loving this week? I’d love to hear about it below in the comments!!

Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue

We’re just 2 days away from our two month anniversary and I’m linking up again for Wedding Wednesday! Time really does fly and we are loving every minute of it. Before we jump into the rest of the wedding festivities I thought I’d share a little bit about some of the details.

My something old was originally supposed to be my veil which a cousin had found in a vintage shop. It looks similar to the one pictured above. Long story short, due to a mistake I ended up walking down the aisle without my veil which actually was probably for the best considering how windy it ended up being. The last thing we needed was for my veil to fly away into the water!!

Luckily, I was also wearing my mom’s necklace that my dad had given to her on their wedding day so I’d say 25 years of a happy marriage definitely counts for my something old. I loved having a part of them with me as I started this new part of my life.

Something new was obviously my dress! More on this topic another day because I think my dress deserves it’s own dedicated post.

For my something borrowed I had my aunt’s/godmother’s pearl earrings. It was important to me that I also had something of her’s with me because she has been such an influential part of my life from the very first day I arrived.

Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 11.40.53 PM

And last but not least…my something blue were rainboots!! As soon as I was 90% sure it was going to rain on our wedding day I ran over to DSW and found an adorable pair of polka dot rainboots in the clearance section. Since it didn’t start pouring until halfway through our ceremony so I didn’t end up wearing them down the aisle but they were close by!

Did you have something old, new, borrowed and blue for your big day??

The Guys Get Ready

Before I jump into todays post I wanted to share my excitement with you all about the fact that one of my sisters got engaged while on her trip to Thailand!! I am so incredibly happy for her and can’t wait to see what the future holds for their family. I feel like this also means that I now definitely have to go to Cali to visit ASAP, right?!

0097_WrightHolt_WED_GBPhoto_20160605It seems like the second round of wedding season is almost upon us because we have a lot of friends and family getting married in just a few short months which makes me even more excited to share about our wedding day. Since last week I talked about the girls, it’s only fair that this week I talk about the guys!

It’s amazing how much more time the guys had than the gals when it came to this whole wedding thing. All they had to do was show up at the venue dressed and ready to go about two hours beforehand. Lucky ducks. Due to the fact that they were already dressed when they arrived I don’t have too many photos of this part, but our photographer had Carson put on his finishing “details” with the help of his best man.

And just for fun, here’s a photo of almost all of the guys before the nuptials. I don’t know how I didn’t see that putting a bunch of guys on a beach full of drift wood would mean that an epic battle had to happen. Next week I’ll be sharing more about our wonderful bridal party and photos so stay tuned!!

The Girls Get Ready

Does anyone else feel like the days just fly by?! Where does the time go? We have almost been married for two entire months and that’s pretty crazy! Today I thought that I would share some of my thoughts about the getting ready process and some photos.

The night before my wedding I wasn’t able to go to bed until around 1:30pm which I know is a big no-no, oops. Usually I need a solid 9 hours to not be a savage beast in the morning but I ended up waking up at 7am unable to go back to sleep because of nerves. The nerves were all due to the fact that I’m not very good in front of large crowds (elopment never looked so good…kidding!).

Getting up so early had it’s perks – I was able to swing by Starbucks and embarrass myself by asking for a cup that said “Bride” and get to the hair salon to keep track of the hair schedule and send the girls on their way to the venue. I waited to get my hair done last thinking it would last slightly longer – incorrect. In hindsight I wish I had gone somewhere in the middle so that I had time to freshen up my curls when I got the venue (this wouldn’t have made a difference though since it was so incredibly windy and ended up raining). So here’s the first tip:

Tip #1

Get your hair done in the middle of your bridesmaids. That way you have plenty of time to get to the venue if you’re having it done elsewhere and to freshen up your hair if you need to. This also gives you more time to handle details if people have questions. Better yet, get everything done at the venue so you can disregard this tip!

I let my photographer do his thing while all of this was happening and was roughly an hour behind schedule when I arrived at the venue. Yep, I was attempting to do deep breathing exercises at this point because I also have a thing about schedules and being late haha Thankfully I had not only wonderful bridesmaids but also a wonderful makeup artist and photographer that were on top of their game so we got back on schedule really quickly.

Tip #2

Trust your vendors because they’ve probably done a ton of weddings and know what they’re doing! They’ll get you through it 😉

At this point I also handed out my gifts to my bridesmaids because I’d given them their shirts earlier…and of course in the craziness leading up to the big day I forgot to take photos of them. But I’ll post some photos of similar things below!

I’m a big fan of useful presents so I decided to give each girl a makeup bag like the one below that they can use at a later time filled with goodies that they could use for the big day and later!

Inside of the bag I had slightly different things for each girl, since everyone is different! The things that were similar were:

This bracelet which I got on a whim and hoped that everyone would like. Turns out they all love it and have gotten so many compliments on it since then!

A notepad similar to the ones pictured above with their initials, because who couldn’t use more notepads?

This adorable bridesmaid minimergency kit that I found at Francesca’s that had a ton of useful things in it.

And some of the unique items that I included for the girls were: nail polish, eye shadow, makeup remover, and a pillowcase set for my Matron of Honor that obviously didn’t fit in the makeup bag since she and her husband are big fans of Beauty and the Beast and it also fit really well with a Bible Study we had just finished doing with them.

See you next week for the dress portion of getting ready!! And a huge thank you to our amazing makeup artist Holly from Extreme Beauty!

Friday Favorites

I can’t believe it’s already Friday – this week flew by! I’m linking up with Amanda today since I haven’t done my favorites in what feels like forever!

Favorite TV Show: The hubby (eek! still get excited just from saying it) and I recently finished binging Raising Hope which originally I didn’t think I would like. But as with 99% of shows that he suggests, I ended up loving it. Basic plot: the main character has a child with a serial killer before he knows who she is and then when she gets executed he gets stuck with the baby and figuring out how to raise her with the help of his crazy family and friends. It’s hilarious, cute, lighthearted and quirky (plus it has a great ending!!).

outfit2Favorite Summer Outfit: I’m 100% a fan of casual clothing, especially in the summer and this outfit is a perfect everyday kind of look. Minus the ripped shorts. I don’t know why but I’ve never been able to get behind that trend even though I like how it looks on other people. As a side note – do you have a favorite place to buy un-ripped shorts? I’m on the prowl for the perfect pair because my favorite ones are getting retired.

Favorite Gallery Wall: As we continue to settle into our apartment we have to think more about decorating and especially how we’re going to display wedding photos!! I love the white frames in the above gallery wall – they just feel so fresh and clean.

Favorite Wedding Photo: It’s impossible to pick one favorite but here is one of my very favorites. Personally, I think this photo is perfection 😉

Favorite Game: PokemonGo. #sorrynotsorry I’m so happy to have one of my all time favorite childhood games back in my life and to see that so many people loving it. Also, since I made my hubby take a 30 minute walk tonight, in the unbearable heat, so that I could catch pokemon I think he wins best husband award.

What are you loving right now?

The Photobooth

Happy Wedding Wednesday! We have now gotten our wedding photos and our video so we’re only waiting on the albums and raw footage which is super exciting. The first time I saw a photobooth at a wedding was 3 years ago at a friends wedding and I thought it was the cutest idea ever so of course we had to have one!

Our photographer designed the photostrips for us which turned out amazing! We also opted to not get a physical copy of the photostrips so there would be more for our guests..and really, it’s much more space efficient to have digital files! Because of all of the craziness, Carson and I only were able to use it once but our guests did really enjoy it which was the entire point! Below you will find some of my favorites from the night.
